Day of General Discussion – 3593rd Meeting 125th Session of Human Rights Committee
Our colleague Daniel Amelang participated in the Half-Day of General Discussion of the 125th Session of the United Nations’ Human Rights Committee. The session is regarding Article 21 (right of peaceful assembly) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
The right of peaceful assembly shall be recognized. No restrictions may be placed on the exercise of this right other than those imposed in conformity with the law and which are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of national security or public safety, public order (ordre public), the protection of public health or morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others.
The 125th session was held at the Palais Wilson in Geneva fon March 20th, 2019. The purpose of the general discussion was to commence the Committee’s process of developing a General Comment on Article 21, in light of the Committee’s experience obtained in the review of State reports and communications on this right. The aim of the General Comment is to provide appropriate and authoritative guidance to States Parties and other actors on the measures to be adopted to ensure full compliance with the rights protected under this provision.
Our colleague’s intervention begins on the hour 1:59:41 of the following video.
